Katarina Abovic is a Chilean contemporary painter based in Porto, Portugal. Her work explores the space between figure and abstraction, where form dissolves into atmosphere and perception remains in motion. Through layered colour, gesture, and drawn line, she builds images that shift between clarity and disappearance. She is currently developing new paintings within the ongoing body of work The Space Between.

I paint the threshold where an image becomes a sensation—where a figure is not fully described, but felt. Moving between figuration and abstraction, my work investigates presence as something unstable: constructed through interruption, vibration, and the accumulation of layers. Faces and bodies appear as traces, held between structure and atmosphere.

 

My process is slow and physical. I work through repeated passages of colour, line, and erasure, allowing control and chance to coexist. Transparencies, fragments, and shifts in value create a space that is both architectural and fluid, as if the painting were holding multiple states at once. Each work becomes an encounter between perception, memory, and quiet transformation.
